MoMA Celebrates Steven Spielberg as a Global Cinema Icon

Steven Spielberg will be honored at the Museum of Modern Art’s annual Film Benefit presented by Chanel on November 12 in New York. The celebration will recognize the legendary filmmaker’s extraordinary career and lasting influence on global cinema.

As part of the celebration, MoMA will present a special screening series featuring eight Spielberg films from its collection. The lineup includes some of his most celebrated works, such as Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Color Purple, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

MoMA’s Long Relationship with Spielberg

MoMA chief curator of film Rajendra Roy highlighted the museum’s relationship with Spielberg, which stretches back more than half a century. Roy praised the filmmaker for demonstrating that artistic ambition and popular entertainment can exist together, while describing his global influence as unparalleled.

Joining a Prestigious List of Honorees

Spielberg joins an impressive list of previous MoMA Film Benefit honorees, including Sofia Coppola, Martin Scorsese, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, and Guillermo del Toro. Chanel has sponsored the annual Film Benefit since 2011.
