There are many major international stars who have performed in Malaysia, from the swooning Coldplay to the legendary A.R. Rahman.
Even so, none of them can compare to the time when the King of Pop set foot on Malaysian soil. Michael Jackson’s arrival was like God’s descent on Earth, and naturally, we went crazy.
And if you want to know more about the legend himself, check our dedicated Michael Jackson page!
The Arrival of the King of Pop in Malaysia

On 26 Oct 1996, Malaysia didn’t just welcome another international superstar. We welcomed the King of Pop.
Michael Jackson landed in Kuala Lumpur as part of his iconic HIStory World Tour, ahead of two massive nights at Merdeka Stadium on 27 and 29 Oct.
Let’s just say, Malaysia was not playing it cool.
Fans packed the old Subang International Airport, chased after his motorcade, and turned every possible sighting into a full-blown moment.
From signing autographs on the way to Toys “R” Us, to getting playfully sprayed with Silly String by children from a children’s home, to waving from his 18th-floor Hilton suite as colourful balloons floated up towards him.
This is the kind of once-in-a-generation pop culture moment that made the whole country stop, stare, scream. Very rare for stars – even the mega ones – of today.
A Performance that Made HIStory
During his time in Malaysia, we witnessed a Michael Jackson live performance that fans would talk about for decades.
One of the most unforgettable moments was Billie Jean. The beat kicked in, the spotlight hit, and suddenly the stadium belonged to the King of Pop.
From the sharp footwork to the iconic moonwalk, every move reminded the crowd why Michael was not just a singer, but a once-in-a-generation performer.
And of course, Billie Jean was only one part of the magic. His other performances were just as stellar.
A Lasting Legacy: Influences and Merchandise
The HIStory Tour didn’t just make an impact on stage, but it has also changed and left things here in Malaysia.
Here are some lasting legacies the King of Pop has gifted us Malaysians:
MJ Suite: A Suite Was Named After Michael Jackson

During his HIStory World Tour stop in Malaysia, he stayed at the Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur, where a suite was later associated with his name. The “MJ Suite”.
For many fans, this little piece of pop history still carries a special kind of magic. It’s a reminder of the week Malaysia had the King of Pop in town.
Decades later, fans still wonder whether the suite is available for guests to book. But whether it remains open to the public or simply lives on as a story, the MJ Suite has become part of Malaysia’s Michael Jackson memory.
Trivia: When Michael was staying in the Concorde Hotel, KLCC was still under construction!
Here are some snapshots of the then and now of KLCC.

Back when Michael Jackson was in Malaysia, the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers weren’t even built yet, or they were still building them!

Present KLCC

Fast forward to today, and KLCC is no longer just that half-built skyline in the background of an MJ memory. It has become one of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic landmarks, and right beneath the PETRONAS Twin Towers sits TGV Suria KLCC — a cinema built for moments that deserve to be ICONIC.
From the latest IMAX with Laser to Dolby Atmos, INDULGE, Beanie, the LED foyer, and that premium city-centre energy, this is where a movie stops feeling like “just a movie”. For something like Michael, where the music, the moves, the crowd, and the legacy all matter, watching it here feels almost poetic. Back then, KLCC was still rising.
Today, it is where fans can gather, sing, cheer, moonwalk, and keep that King of Pop magic alive.
Merchandise and Memorabilia of The HIStory Tour

One standout piece of memorabilia is the rare double cassette tape edition released in Kuala Lumpur.
It may look like a simple collectible today, but back then, it was a proud little treasure for fans who wanted to keep a piece of the King of Pop close.
For collectors, it remains a reminder of the HIStory era and the unforgettable time when Michael Jackson fever truly arrived in Kuala Lumpur.
MJ Fever Took Over TGV
When Michael comes around, you already know the fans do not just sit quietly and watch. They show up. They dress up. They sing, they cheer, they moonwalk, and suddenly the cinema hall feels less like a screening and more like a full-blown MJ celebration.
That is exactly the kind of energy we love at TGV. From MICHAEL: One-Night Only IMAX Finale to MICHAEL: This Is MJ!, TGV’s fan events brought together the gloves, the hats, the jackets, the poses, the screams, and all that King of Pop magic under one roof.
So if you ever wondered whether Malaysians still go all out for Michael Jackson, yes. Very yes. Check out what went down at our past TGV Events and you will see why the MJ spirit is still alive, still loud, and still making people move.
FUN FACT: Did You Know A Lucky Fan Managed to Dance On Stage With MJ?
Talk about luck.
This is luckier than winning the lottery because to be on the SAME stage as Michael Jackson is already a privilege, let alone dancing with him!
