Indonesia Remakes Descendants of the Sun as a Feature Film

TLDR: Nearly two years after the project was first announced, Indonesia is moving forward with its remake of the hit South Korean drama Descendants of the Sun.

The adaptation will bring together two of Indonesia’s biggest stars while reimagining the beloved series in a new format.

Dian Sastrowardoyo and Reza Rahadian Lead the Cast

Dian Sastrowardoyo, widely known across Southeast Asia for Gadis Kretek and Ada Apa Dengan Cinta, will take on the role originally played by Song Hye-kyo.

Opposite her, award-winning actor Reza Rahadian will step into the character made famous by Song Joong-ki in the original Korean drama.

Unlike the 2016 original, which was released as a television series, the Indonesian adaptation will be produced as a feature film. The remake is currently scheduled for release in 2027.

Original Korean Studio Joins the Remake

Studio NEW, the Korean production company behind the original Descendants of the Sun, is directly involved in the Indonesian adaptation through both licensing and production.

The company’s distribution subsidiary, Contents Panda, is also expected to handle the film’s distribution in South Korea, giving the remake a direct connection to the team behind the original series.

Hanung Bramantyo Directs

The Indonesian remake will be directed by Hanung Bramantyo, whose previous films include Ayat-Ayat Cinta and Perempuan Berkalung Sorban.

With a high-profile cast, an established Indonesian director, and involvement from the original Korean studio, the new Descendants of the Sun is shaping up to be one of Indonesia’s most notable upcoming adaptations.
