Michael Johnston, the breakout star of the indie sensation Obsession, is reportedly in early talks to join Universal Pictures’ upcoming The Mummy reboot. The new film will reunite Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, bringing the beloved adventure franchise back to the big screen for a new generation of audiences.

Johnston’s career has rapidly accelerated following the unexpected success of Obsession.

Produced on a modest USD 750,000 budget, the film was acquired by Focus Features after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before becoming a global box office phenomenon, earning more than USD 458 million worldwide.

Before his breakout performance, Johnston appeared in television series Teen Wolf and films including Slash and Endangered Species. Following the success of Obsession, he signed with talent agency Gersh, marking a significant step in his rising Hollywood career.

The Return of The Mummy as a Defining Franchise

The Mummy remains one of Universal’s most successful franchises, with previous films collectively earning more than USD1.8 billion worldwide. The original 1999 blockbuster, directed by Stephen Sommers, starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz and was followed by the successful sequel The Mummy Returns in 2001.

The upcoming reboot will be directed by Radio Silence, the filmmaking team behind Scream and Ready or Not, with a theatrical release currently scheduled for Oct 15, 2027.
