A Standing Ovation With Nolan Comparing Performance to Heath Ledger’s Joker
Christopher Nolan has revealed that the cast and crew of The Odyssey spontaneously applauded Samantha Morton’s performance during filming.
In a rare moment, the director says he has not experienced since Heath Ledger’s unforgettable work on The Dark Knight nearly 20 years ago.
Morton plays the enchantress Circe, a character Nolan described as the emotional and narrative “fulcrum” of the entire film. Although her screen time is relatively limited, Nolan believes the success of the story depended heavily on her performance.
Why Matt Damon Was Chosen as Odysseus
Nolan explained that Matt Damon was the perfect choice to portray Odysseus because of his ability to balance relatability with heroic presence. According to the director, the legendary Greek king needed to feel both like an ordinary man and an extraordinary hero.
Damon also impressed the production team during the physically demanding shoot, which involved difficult filming locations and extensive sequences on boats. Nolan praised the actor’s commitment, suggesting the production would have been far more challenging without him.
An All-Star Cast Brings Greek Mythology to Life
Joining Damon are Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus, with Nolan assembling what he described as the finest group of actors to portray some of mythology’s most iconic characters.
