Who is Karamjit Singh? – A Brief History of Asia’s Flying Sikh

You know a real racer when the nickname sticks for decades, and “Flying Sikh” has followed Karamjit Singh since he first climbed behind the wheel back in 1985.

He earned it the honest way, by driving as the finish line owed him money, and by winning a world title in 2002 on his very first attempt at it.

You could spend years trying to become the first Asian driver to win the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship, and most people never would. Karamjit did it once, then went back and picked up the Asia Pacific Rally Championship three separate times, because apparently one legacy wasn’t quite enough for him.

He kept racing well into his 60s, still chasing podiums long after most competitors had hung up their helmets.

Overcoming Obstacles to Reach the Top

You’d think winning a world championship would fix your money problems. It didn’t, and by 2005, you’re watching Karamjit Singh nearly sell his own apartment just to ship his rally car home from New Zealand.

That’s the part people skip over when they talk about his career. The trophies are easy to admire; the sponsorship gap that almost ended everything is less so.

He turned down public handouts, kept knocking on corporate doors, and somehow kept racing anyway. Not exactly a Hollywood montage, more a quiet, stubborn kind of persistence that eventually got him back on track.

A Movie Dedicated to Karamjit Singh’s Story and Legacy – Terbang

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to become a rally legend, you can find out in the movie Terbang

The film follows Ajeet, a rally driver inspired by Karamjit Singh’s own story, as he’s pulled back into racing after years away, teaming up with a young hotshot driver to chase a shot at the world championship.

If you have ever wondered what a real Malaysian sporting hero looks like, you have probably already met him, maybe just not by name. Karamjit Singh has spent decades showing you what it means to keep going, even when the sponsors disappear.

You can trace a straight line from his early rally wins to the younger drivers now taking on the same gravel roads and tarmac stretches he once conquered. They may not always say his name out loud, but you can bet his story is somewhere in the back of their minds when they strap in.

Karamjit Singh built something that outlasted his career, and if you look closely at Malaysia’s newer generation of racers, you will find his fingerprints all over it.
