TLDR: Kadokawa and Aniplex launch new company Anime Inc. for better anime film distribution.

New Joint Venture of 2 Anime Giants
Kadokawa and Aniplex have established Animec Inc., a new company dedicated to anime film distribution and promotion.
The name “Animec” combines the words “Anime” and “Cinema,” while also paying homage to a popular anime magazine that was published until the 1980s.
The company’s mission is to deliver anime films directly to fans and contribute to the development of the industry through carefully planned and optimised theatrical release strategies.
Business Strategy and Purpose
Animec aims to maximise the value of anime works through nationwide theatrical releases across Japan, special cinema screenings of television anime series, and active collaboration with fans, content holders, and theatre operators.
The strategy reflects a stronger push toward cinematic experiences for anime content.
Corporate Background of Aniplex and Kadokawa
Aniplex, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan, owns major animation studios including A-1 Pictures and CloverWorks, as well as the game company Lasengle.
The company also operates Aniplex of America for English-speaking markets and Aniplex Shanghai for China operations. In March 2025, Aniplex further expanded its footprint by establishing HAYATE Inc. in partnership with Crunchyroll.
Sony strengthened its relationship with Kadokawa in January 2025 by becoming its largest shareholder, holding approximately a 10% stake.
Planned collaborations between the companies include live-action adaptations, anime co-productions, global distribution initiatives, game publishing, and virtual production development.
What This Means for Anime Fans?
The launch of Animec Inc. marks another strategic move in strengthening the theatrical distribution infrastructure of the anime industry. As global demand for anime continues to grow, this venture signals a stronger focus on cinema-first strategies and international expansion.
