Recommended Best IMAX Movies (So Far)

With some personal and peer opinions and online research, here are the movies we thought to be perfectly optimised for the IMAX screen.

Again, this list is purely opinionated, so readers’ discretion is advised.

1. Interstellar – Nov 2014

Interstellar (2014) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Timothee Chalamet

Christopher Nolan’s space epic follows a farmer and ex-NASA pilot who joins a mission beyond our galaxy to find humanity a new home as Earth becomes uninhabitable.

This is the film that reminds you why IMAX exists. About 50% of Interstellar was shot using large-format IMAX 70mm cameras.

You’ll notice the difference immediately when those full-frame sequences fill your entire field of vision. The space scenes pull you into the void alongside the crew.

The sound design also hits differently, with Hans Zimmer’s organ-heavy score physically moving through the theatre space.

Yes, some dialogue gets buried under the music and effects, but that’s part of Nolan’s intentional experience.

2. Oppenheimer – Jul 2023

Oppenheimer (2023) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Gary Oldman

Amazingly, this film was shot entirely on IMAX 70mm and 65mm large-format film stock, making it the longest IMAX film ever produced.

Nolan even worked with Kodak to create black-and-white IMAX film for the first time, giving certain sequences an unprecedented visual depth.

When we saw it in proper IMAX, we could feel the atomic test sequences in our chest. The format transforms intimate dialogue scenes into something unexpectedly powerful.

3. Top Gun Maverick – May 2022

Top Gun Maverick (2022) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Joseph Kosinski
Cast: Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer

This legendary movie was filmed almost entirely with IMAX cameras mounted on actual fighter jets with real actors inside, and you’ll feel every single second of that choice.

With IMAX, you get up to 26% more picture than standard formats. When Maverick pulls into a steep climb or banks hard through a canyon, the expanded frame pulls you into the cockpit. The rumble of jet engines through IMAX sound systems becomes physical.

People left cinemas calling it one of the most visceral cinematic experiences in years, and they weren’t exaggerating for once.

4. F1: The Movie – Jun 2025

F1: The Movie (2025) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Joseph Kosinski
Cast: Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Simone Ashley

We love how this is filmed during the actual Grand Prix weekends with IMAX cameras strapped to real cars.

It’s like you are actually sitting in the cockpit while someone takes a corner at 190mph, which is either thrilling or terrifying – it was VERY thrilling for us.

This is enhanced through the IMAX speakers, which slam the roar straight into your chest so every gear change and high-speed pass shakes you to the core.

5. Sinners – Apr 2025

Sinners (2025) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Ryan Coogler
Cast: Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mossaku, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo, Jack O’Connell

Many praised Sinners for its originality, but one could say the secret ingredient is the combination of immense storytelling and IMAX.

It’s a movie that made everyone remember why IMAX exists.

Coogler shot it with IMAX 15/65mm cameras and Ultra Panavision 70 lenses, creating that super-wide image that swallows you whole.

When you watch it in IMAX 70MM, you’re seeing colours and shadows that simply don’t translate to your living room. The sound design matters too—Ludwig Göransson’s score hits differently when it’s rumbling through an IMAX system.

It’s basically something you can NEVER experience outside of a cinema.

6. Captain America: Civil War – May 2016

Captain America: Civil War (2016) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: The Russo Brothers
Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Holland

The Avengers split into opposing factions when governments demand oversight of their actions, forcing former allies to face off in a conflict that becomes deeply personal.

Notably, the airport battle sequence was shot using IMAX’s digital 2D cameras for the very first time in cinema history.

That means roughly 15 minutes of the film expands to fill the entire IMAX screen, giving you about 26% more image than standard formats.

The difference is genuinely noticeable during the big showdown between Team Cap and Team Stark. Team Cap forever!!

7. Ne Zha 2 – Mar 2025

Ne Zha 2 (2025) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Jiaozi
Cast: Lü Yanting, Han Mo, Lu Qi, Zhang Jiaming, Wang Deshun, Zhuo Yongxi

Ne Zha’s 2 animation quality is sharp enough to justify the IMAX screen, and when Ne Zha absorbs samadhi fire during the climax, you’ll want every pixel of that sequence.

With so much incentive to watch Ne Zha 2 on the big screens, we can see why it broke into the list of the highest-grossing films of that year.

Around 55% of screenings were in 3D, which actually works here as the depth doesn’t feel gimmicky, especially when dragons are breaking out of giant cauldrons.

IMAX has the ability to turn animated films into pure magic. Through ultra-bright laser projectors, they unleash stunning colour depth and vivid details you rarely see elsewhere.

8. Deadpool And Wolverine – Jul 2024

Deadpool And Wolverine (2024) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Shawn Levy
Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Matthew Macfadyen

Dealing with rapid-fire action sequences, meta fourth-wall breaks happening mid-fight, and those signature Deadpool gore moments, IMAX is almost a must.

This premium treatment gave audiences what they didn’t know they needed: every bone-cracking fight scene between these two volatile heroes filling your entire field of vision.

The clarity of the format means you catch the smaller visual gags tucked into the mayhem—because this film layers jokes everywhere, including places you might miss on a standard screen!

9. Avatar 3: Fire And Ash – Dec 2025

Avatar 3: Fire And Ash (2025) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: James Cameron
Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet

The Avatar films were built for IMAX- no questions asked.

Cameron shot The Way of Water entirely with IMAX cameras, which means you’re getting the full frame he intended. The bioluminescent forests in the first film felt like walking through an alien jungle.

Audiences consistently mention the sense of depth when watching James Cameron movies in IMAX. The 3D doesn’t feel gimmicky; it adds layers to Pandora’s ecosystems.

10. Malbatt Misi Bakara – Aug 2023

Avatar 3: Fire And Ash (2023) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Adrian Teh
Cast: Bront Palarae, Shaheizy Sam, Hairul Azreen, Zahiril Adzim, Syazwan Zulkifly

You probably haven’t heard this story before, and that’s exactly why it matters.

Malbatt: Misi Bakara follows 19 Malaysian soldiers from the Royal Malay Regiment who rescued 70 trapped US Rangers during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu.

Think Black Hawk Down, just from a completely different angle.

This became the first Malaysian film ever shown in IMAX, which feels like a quiet flex that speaks volumes.

Director Adrian Teh specifically remastered the film for the format after realising the original American version left out an entire rescue mission.

The IMAX treatment makes perfect sense here as you will be getting real explosions (minimal CGI touch-ups), close-quarters combat in armoured Condor vehicles, and chaotic street warfare.

Local audiences responded well to seeing a war film that wasn’t the usual Hollywood perspective, especially in a format typically reserved for blockbuster franchises.

11. Dune: Part 2 – Feb 2024

Dune: Part 2 (2024) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Denis Villeneuve
Cast: Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh

It’s epic, sprawling, and designed to swallow you whole, that is, if you’re watching this in IMAX.

This is one of those rare films where seeing it in IMAX isn’t just recommended, it’s practically mandatory.

The format captures the massive scale of Arrakis in ways a regular screen simply can’t match. You’ll want to catch the sweeping desert landscapes, the detail in those enormous sandworms, and the way light plays across the dunes.

The film delivers up to 26% more breathtaking images on the giant screen, letting you soak in every epic detail of its massive visual scope.

We love how Roger Deakins-level cinematography finally gets the huge canvas it truly deserves, making every frame feel larger-than-life and unforgettable.

12. G-Dragon In Cinema: Übermensch – Jul 2025

G-Dragon In Cinema: Übermensch (2025) | Best IMAX Movies | TGV Cinemas

Director: Byun Jin Ho
Cast: G-Dragon

Now here’s a wildcard. While it is technically not a movie, G-Dragon In Cinema: Übermensch title is shot like one.

This concert film captures G-Dragon’s 2025 Übermensch World Tour, documenting live performances that span his career-defining hits alongside newer material.

The IMAX format turns this into something beyond a typical concert recording. The film was shot using multi-camera 8K setups, and IMAX cinemas showcase every detail. These include facial expressions and stage movements.

Plus, the Dolby Atmos sound design hits differently on IMAX’s audio systems, letting you feel the bass and crowd energy in ways that justify the premium ticket price.
