Disney and Pixar are returning to Land of the Dead for “Coco 2.”
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger announced the follow-up film during the company’s annual shareholder meeting. The sequel, which is early in the development process, is slated for theatrical release in 2029. Plot details haven’t been revealed.
The 2017 film was both a critical and commercial success, earning two Academy Awards and surpassing $800 million in global box office revenue. The story centers on 12-year-old Miguel, who aspires to play the guitar despite his family's long-standing prohibition on music. On Mexico’s Dia de Los Muertos, he embarks on a journey to the Land of the Dead to uncover the truth about his ancestors. Coco won Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the touching ballad Remember Me.
